Broadcast Technology Workflows – The Fundamentals
Leith Murgai, IABM Training Academy
Experienced trainer Leith Murgai has been pioneering new production technology in the broadcast industry for the last decade. He has trained several thousand people in disciplines ranging from shooting and editing to end-to end broadcast workflows. His most recent projects are with Sky News Arabia, BSkyB, and IABM. This work is centered on helping individuals understand and use digital workflows as efficiently and easily as possible. Speaking both English and ‘Geek’ - his natural environment is that sometimes awkward interface between the production teams (who do things) and engineers (who make and fix the things the producers break). In 2001 Leith trained nearly 1,000 people worldwide to shoot and edit as part of Michael Rosenblum’s revolutionary video journalism training team with clients including BBC Nations & Regions, TV4 Sweden, Voice of America and Endemol. He went on to work for CBBC and BBC Current Affairs, helping staff to gain shooting and editing skills.
In 2006, Leith took on the role of Production Innovation Manager for BBC Entertainment Comedy which saw him helping productions to streamline workflows and use new technology and techniques to save time and money. He worked on the BBC’s earliest file-based workflow trials on Dragon’s Den and The Thick of It. Later, as a senior consultant for Mediasmiths, Leith worked with Sky, BBC, Kit Digital, Salford University, ViaSat, Ericsson and SVT handling systems design and workflow development.
