Introduced last year at Digital Video Expo, the Pro Media Conference is designed to educate, motivate and engage professionals working in media and entertainment, video and audio production, internet and mobile video, AV, government, corporate video environments, and IT. Through a series of papers, panels, case studies, and networking opportunities, PMC gives media pros access to the information and technology that allows them to create, manage, monetize, and deliver compelling content for all video applications, across all platforms and for all customers.

Conference will run in two rooms for 2 days: Wednesday, Sept. 25 and Thursday, Sept.26.

3 Point Lighting for On-Camera Talent and Interviews with LED Lighting Fixtures
Presenter: Pat Grosswendt

3 point lighting, key, fill and backlight are the basis of proper modeled light for on-camera talent or interview subject. This session will discuss achieving proper portrait or modeling lighting using some of the features that are unique to the modern LED lighting fixtures. The lighting subject will be a seated interview subject, utilizing a video camera feeding a monitor so that session attendees can see the results of the lighting under actual viewing conditions.

The presenter will switch to several different models of portable LED lights so session attendees can see the effects that using different LED features, such as color temperature variation and diffusion, have on the lighted subject. And since many interviews and on-camera talent presentations are done with quick setups and often in busy places, the presenter will power all the lights used via battery pack, without AC cables running across the floor.

The Evolving Role of the Cinematographer in the Digital and Virtual Age

Since the conception of film, cinematography and imagery were synonymous. Rarely, if ever, would anyone usurp the cinematographer’s acknowledged prerogative to be the main contributor to the artistic and technical quality of the film image. However, today and going forward, images in film are no longer produced as the result only of the traditional tools of cinematography. After the advent of more sophisticated digital and virtual cinematography cameras, and its subsequent workflows and accessories, two award winning cinematographers, Director of Photography Yuri Neyman, ASC and Director of Photography Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC and their colleagues, are working together at the Global Cinematography Institute to further the advances of digital and virtual cinematography in the motion picture industry and are implementing the creation of a new discipline, “Expanded Cinematography.”

Khaled’s first self-directed feature documentary, “Egypt: The Story Behind the Revolution,” was released in 2011 and has won several awards at film festivals around the world. He has just released his second feature documentary, “Stories From Tahrir,” which picks up where the first film left off, and shows the human complexities of the ongoing revolution in Egypt. Khaled will show you the best way to plan your independent documentary from getting ideas to production, post production, what to use for equipment, how to market your film using social media, and self distribution.

The 4K Question
Presenter: Odin Lindblom

Many independent filmmakers believe that 4K production is unaffordable and unimportant; in reality, we are on the verge of a sequel to the SD/HD acquisition evolution. The proposed Rec 2020 broadcast standard allows for greater detail but substantially larger color space than HDTV. Drawing on his experience from his 4K documentary, Bikeman Begins, Odin will discuss technical, creative, and budgetary challenges and solutions of 4K production in this Powerpoint and video pesentation.

The methodology and techniques for a cinematographer to “control” the image after it has been shot is a process which began in 1938 by Director of Photography Leon Shamroy, ASC, and has continued into modern times with Apple’s iPhone and iPad apps being used on-set today. This presentation will explain a brief history of cinematographer’s attempts to previsualize the results of their filming, and will demonstrate workflows and methodology of systems used today for on-set color corrections.

Jordi will make the case for non-branded content, differentiating between online and TV content, and the need for strategic distribution.

Many video producers unite footage from multiple cameras into a single project space, but face delays and complexities when moving footage out of the camera and into the production workflow. This session is a case study of MarVista Entertainment’s innovative workflow for digital dailies and review & approval using cloud computing to dramatically expedite the process on projects. Implementing this workflow has resulted in routinely having dailies up and ready to watch 24 hours earlier on average.
