DVE Center Stage: Lighting Master Class | FREE to all attendees

The Master Classes In Lighting sessions will be led by veteran director of photography George Spiro Dibie, ASC. Each will feature different top cinematographers, who will show clips from favorite projects and then discuss how the lighting was accomplished. They will then take questions from the audience at hand. Dibie will serve as the host and moderator for all four sessions. The classes will be FREE to all Expo attendees and take place in the DVE Center Stage.

"The quality of the lighting is one of the key distinctions between competent camerawork and fine cinematography, regardless of your recording device, whether is be film or digital, HD or SD," says DV magazine editor David E. Williams, who is also the Digital Video Expo Conference Chair. "All of the directors of photography participating in these sessions are experienced veterans who have been faced with every possible lighting scenario, from immense sets to intimate portraiture. And anyone who is seeking to improve their own images would do well to sit in on each of the Master Classes in Lighting sessions, which are absolutely free for all Expo attendees."

This year, for Digital Video Expo 2010, Dibie will plotted out an entirely new program of speakers from the American Society of Cinematography to discuss the art of lighting. Previous speakers have included such ASC luminaries as Owen Roizman, Daniel Pearl, Johnny E. Jensen, Isidore Mankofsky, Don M. Morgan, David Darbey, Denis Lenoir, Roberto Schaefer, Anthony R. THE BUZZ AROUND 3D is at a fever pitch from box-office behemoths like Avatar to the imminent launch of several 3D television networks. So, in the latest installment of the Television Industry Leadership Series, B&C and Multichannel News will bring together an elite gathering of Hollywood executives to reveal plans for 3D content and whether the buzz will lead to big business, or is just a three-dimensional fad. Already on board to speak at “Where 3D Meets Hollywood” are Fox Networks Group Chairman/CEO Tony Vinciquerra, NBC Entertainment/Universal Media Studios Chairman Marc Graboff and Deadliest Catch Executive Producer Jeff Conroy. Plus, CBS research guru David Poltrack will present his latest findings on how big 3D might get. The event will take place Sept. 29 from 2-3:30 p.m., as part of the 2010 Digital Video Expo.
Jeff Conroy, Executive Produer, Deadliest Catch
Promoted in September 2007 to his current position as Vice President, Programming, Conroy works with the company’s production teams to ensure the Original Productions’ brand of storytelling develops into the compelling and engaging shows television audiences have come to demand. He is Thom Beer’s key architect in designing how the Original Productions’ teams plan production, shoot, produce, and tell great stories in difficult and dangerous environments. Conroy is the Executive Producer on the Emmy® Award winning “Deadliest Catch,” which has just completed an enormously successful sixth season on Discovery. It is Conroy’s belief that “Monster Garage” and “Deadliest Catch” were the series that helped Original Productions refine its authentic storytelling ability. He is passionate about every aspect of his behind the scenes mission of feeding a bigger vision, from guiding camera operators, producers, and show runners to presenting the most compelling true story.
Tom Cosgrove, President and CEO, Sony-Discovery Communications-IMAX Joint Venture 3D Television Network
Tom Cosgrove oversees all business and creative areas of the Sony-Discovery Communications-IMAX joint venture 3D television network, announced in January 2010. Expected to launch in early 2011 as one of the first full-time, all-3D television offerings in the U.S., the network will feature high-quality original content from the joint venture partners, as well as third-party acquisitions from leading 3D content producers, in genres that are most appealing in 3D, including everything from natural history and adventure to theatrical releases and IMAX movies. In his role as President and CEO, Cosgrove oversees all business and creative areas of the joint venture, with a goal of providing viewers with the highest quality in-home 3D experience and giving the network long-term leadership in the 3D home marketplace. Prior to being named to lead the joint venture in June 2010, Cosgrove served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Discovery Channel, managing day-to-day operations, including overall business strategy, programming, development and marketing. While with Discovery Channel, he was also responsible for the formation of the Discovery Times Square Exhibitions, as well as windowing strategies for all Discovery digital platforms. Before that, Cosgrove served as General Manager of Science Channel, where he initiated a global rebranding of the channel, and had direct oversight of network programming, development/production, marketing, and business and brand-enhancing strategies. He joined Discovery Communications as Senior Vice President of Programming for the portfolio of Discovery Channel, Science Channel, Discovery Times and Military Channel. Prior to joining Discovery, Cosgrove served as General Manager for TV Guide Channel, where he had direct oversight of the brand/content strategy, including programming, development, production, marketing, business affairs, communications, research and operations, and the creation of an in-house production unit, live unit, and studio operation. Cosgrove also developed and introduced an interactive interface for the channel, and helped guide the content direction for the company's VOD and online platforms. He was responsible for year-over-year ratings growth for the first time in TV Guide Channel history, the highest-rated events in channel history, and substantially stronger CPMs and advertising sell-out. Cosgrove also has held senior management positions at ABC Family, Fox Family, Fox Kids, and Fox Broadcasting, spanning live sports, programming, acquisitions, marketing, research, sales, operations, and affiliate relations. He began his career at Leo Burnett USA. Cosgrove holds an MBA and B.A. from the University of Wisconsin. ###
Marc Graboff, Chairman, NBC Entertainment & Universal Media Studios
Marc Graboff is Chairman, NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios, a position to which he was appointed in July 2009. He previously served as Co-Chairman, NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios from May 2007 to July 2009. He reports to Jeff Gaspin, Chairman, NBC Universal Television Entertainment. Prior to that, Graboff was President, NBC Universal Television, West Coast, a title he held since January 2006. In that role, he had oversight of NBC Entertainment, NBC Universal Television Studio, the NBC Agency, and NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution. He has also been the chief business affairs executive for these groups as well as the entertainment cable networks USA Network, SCI FI Channel and Bravo.

David F. Poltrack is Chief Research Officer, CBS Corporation and President of CBS VISION. Poltrack oversees all research operations at CBS encompassing audience measurement, market research, program testing, advertising research, and monitoring of the national and international video marketplace. He designed and oversees TELEVISION CITY at the MGM GRAND, Las Vegas, CBS’ state of the art Research Center. CBS VISION is a research unit exploring and offering insight on emerging technologies, media consumption patterns, and advertising value in the media marketplace.
Tony Vinciquerra, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, Fox Networks Group
Tony Vinciquerra is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Fox Networks Group (an operating unit of News Corporation NASDAQ:NWS) where he supervises all aspects of the top-rated Fox Broadcasting Company, including program development, marketing, finance, advertising sales, affiliate relations, administration, and human resources. He also manages the business activities of FOX Sports Media Group, technological support entity Fox Networks Engineering & Operations, oversees Fox Cable Networks’ expanding portfolio of national and regional programming services, as well as the growing Fox International Channels.

Philip Hodgetts, Technologist/Editor
A technologist, editor, industry pundit, podcasting veteran and specialist in new distribution systems, Philip Hodgetts has 25 years experience in production and post, more than 10 of them the in digital realm. He is a recognized authority on the changing nature of the digital landscape and has an enviable record of accurately predicting the implication of changing technology over the last decade. His early adoption of non-linear editing gave him insight into the business effect of technology adoption. His very early use of podcasting led to the development of its business implications and opportunities. Hodgetts spoke at the 2006 MCA-I ProTrak conference post NAB on "Evolving Distribution Systems" to an exceptionally strong and warm response; delivered the keynote address at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences NEXT TV symposium in 2006 and the keynote address at the NAB 2007 Podcast Summit. At NAB 2007, Hodgetts announced his latest venture, the Open Television Network. The only truly open system for independent producers to publish their shows in a marketplace that provides a direct connection with the viewer and a solid revenue model for producers, it is all based on industry-standard RSS delivery. The Open Television Network is powered by unique technology created by Hodgetts and his co-founder, Dr. Gregory Clarke. His weekly show Creative Planet's Digital Production BuZZ became a reference point for digital production, postproduction and distribution technology and business and follows on the five years of success as co-host and managing editor of DV Guys. Ned Soltz, Contributing Editor, DV Magazine
An author, editor, educator, and consultant on all things related to the Mac digital video world, Ned Soltz bought his first Mac SE some 15 years ago and never looked back. He began editing independent projects in Adobe Premiere but switched to Apple Final Cut Pro 1.0 the day after it was introduced at NAB. Soltz became one of the founding members of the L.A. Final Cut Pro Users Group, the largest FCP User Group in the world. Ned is a forum moderator on 2-pop.com and is the author of numerous articles and product reviews related to FCP, After Effects and the non-linear production environment. He is co-author of "Revolutionary Final Cut Pro 3" and "Revolutionary Adobe After Effects 5.5," a technical editor of three other volumes and is in the process of writing a yet-to-be-announced book. When he is not evaluating products, writing books and reviews or dispensing advice, he tries to find the time to shoot and edit documentaries as well as promotional and educational pieces for non-profit agencies. Soltz is a contributing editor to both DV and Videography magazines.

Informed by recent business and technology developments, as well as product introductions from the NAB and IBC shows, DV and Videography contributing editor Oliver Peters projects into the future with a look at how postproduction paths may change over the coming months, paying special attention to 3D post, NLE systems and plug-ins, color management, storage and networking, tapeless workflows, and the challenges of the ever-changing image-capture landscape -- from the latest digital camera systems like ARRI's Alexa and Panasonic's AG-3DA1 3D camera to the proliferation of HDSLR cameras currently in use for video production.
Oliver Peters, Contributing Editor, DV Magazine
Having worked in the television, film and entertainment industry since 1970, Oliver Peters has accrued a diverse range of experience in all facets of production, postproduction and project management. In addition to "hands-on" positions, he has constructed various film and video facilities and served as project manager for many different entertainment venues. His credits include national and international TV and film projects, which have won such awards as the NATPE Iris, Telly, ITS Monitor, a national Addy and others. AVVMM Producer magazine named Peters one of the Top 100 Producers in 2001. He currently freelances as a project manager, editor and designer, as well as consult on facility design. Oliver is also a contributing editor to Videography and DV magazines and the Creative Planet Web sites, writing about editing and postproduction topics and products.
