Unless you've been living in a cave (and even if you have), you know that DSLR hybrid cameras are the rage this year -- and deservedly so. Although Nikon was the first to bring a combination digital single lens reflex and high-definition video camera to market, it was Canon who caused the real stir, offering a gargantuan sensor (24mm x 36mm) in their EOS 5D Mark II camera, and then following that fairly quickly with the EOS 7D, which features an APS-C sensor nearly exactly the same size as the Super35mm chip in the Panavision Genesis or RED cameras -- at a fraction of the cost.
Attend Digital Video Expo's all-day Canon 5D session to learn about the camera and its capabilities, as well as the best tools and techniques to make HDSLR filmmaking a reality.

Williams, who is also the Digital Video Expo Conference Chair. "All of the directors of photography participating in these sessions are experienced veterans who have been faced with every possible lighting scenario, from immense sets to intimate portraiture. And anyone who is seeking to improve their own images would do well to sit in on each of the Master Classes in Lighting sessions, which are absolutely free for all Expo attendees."

DSLR Filmmaking: Accessories and Adapters
Unless you've been living in a cave (and even if you have), you know that DSLR hybrid cameras are the rage this year -- and deservedly so.
There are, however, tradeoffs when using the cameras for video. These DSLR hybrids are really still cameras with added-on HD capabilities. Their form factor is not suited for actual production work. Even just handholding a DLSR and shooting video is infinitely more challenging than handholding a small camcorder. They're simply designed for a different kind of shooting.
What this means is that you have to accessorize your DSLR to make it more production-friendly. If you're not careful, the accessories can quickly amount to more than the price of the camera itself. The trick is to figure out what you really need and find the highest quality, most versatile components to fit those needs at the price you can afford.
Join our sessions to learn about the best tools and accessories to make DSLR filmmaking a reality.

Autodesk Smoke on a Mac
With Autodesk Smoke on the Mac, the idea is to provide an all-in-one editorial finishing tool to a market that prefers the Mac environment and would never consider the Linux systems products. This makes Smoke an ideal companion to Avid Media Composer or Apple Final Cut Studio. Obviously it's possible to do many of the same things in Final Cut Studio using Motion and Color, but you have to go into several different applications to do that. Many facilities will find that the same tasks can be done more efficiently and effectively by staying all within one advanced interface.
This makes a lot of sense for mid-tier post houses or broadcast facilities, which might be configured with several FCP bays and Xsan shared storage. Adding a seat of Smoke for the "hero suite" is an easy integration, since it can live on the same storage. It's no longer a Linux "island." Key is the ability for Smoke to handle compressed formats, like Apple ProRes, Avid DNxHD, DVCPRO HD, AVC-Intra and image sequence files, such as 3DS and Filmbox files from 3DS Max and Maya, as well as native support for P2, XDCAM and RED files. Since the Smoke software is installed on the same Mac as other applications, it's now possible for the Smoke operator to also have Adobe Photoshop or After Effects open on the same computer right alongside Smoke.
As the broadcast world transitions to HD, the post community will inevitably continue to struggle in a mixed format world -- posting in various HD flavors, but delivering a wide range of target formats. Smoke is resolution-independent, so it can easily handle 4K source material to build a 2K timeline and finally deliver both HD and SD broadcast masters.

DSLR Filmmaking: Postproduction
Video-enabled digital still cameras continue to be hot and Canon, more so than other manufacturers, has been on the vanguard. Nearly every DP we know has responded to at least one bid where the client requested a hybrid DSLR and quite a few have put down their film, RED, P2 and Sony cameras to shoot predominantly with a Canon EOS 1D/5D/7D camera. Although it still takes a number of accessories to make these cameras "motion-production friendly," most of the learning curve is behind us.
The post vendors have responded in kind, with the latest NLE updates from Adobe and Avid designed to address this trend. One of the early stumbling blocks -- the true 30fps frame rate of the first 5D cameras -- is gone, thanks to a firmware update earlier this year. Now, these Canons all shoot in video-friendly frame rates and it's easier than ever to post the footage. Learn more about post in an HDSLR world in this two-part session.

DSLR Filmmaking: Postproduction | Part 2

NLE Plug-Ins
Adding plug-ins to your nonlinear editor is the easiest way to customize your editing system. In the last few years, the makers of NLE plug-ins have become increasingly ambitious trying to pack in more capability and speed at a lower cost. In fact, some plug-ins have outgrown their host NLEs and employ interfaces of their own to provide maximum control over very complex tasks.
Many of the more advanced plug-ins are designed to go through Adobe After Effects before ending up in the NLE timeline, a process that allows for much greater control and fine tuning. The historical trend in designing plug-ins has been to make them capable of performing advanced tasks while working easily within the host NLE or application. But, some companies are choosing to create their own interfaces that work independently from the NLE. This allows them to design a more powerful effect system that circumvents the restricted way in which many NLEs manage plug-ins.
